It is indisputable that LED lighting can create the same amount of light as a traditional incandescent bulb while using a fraction of the energy. Despite this, the question has been raised of whether the embodied energy of their production and distribution results in more energy consumption. In yesterday’s New York Times the long awaited question was answered. In a study conducted by the German lighting company Osram, they concluded that over the entire life of the light bulb—from manufacturing to disposal—the energy used by an incandescent bulb is almost five times that used in LED lighting.
