Insulation is one of the best ways to reduce energy consumption and building operating costs. A key indicator for an insulator's quality is the R-Value. The R-Value represents the building's insulation quality; the higher the R-Value the greater resistance occurs in the heat flow. Good quality insulation can provide cost savings by stemming the loss of hot and cold air from the building. Rigid foam insulation can offer a high R-Value that saves energy over the life of the building. Plastic insulations can include hazardous chemicals that should always be avoided.
There is a whole line of natural insulation materials such as sheep’s wool, hemp, cotton, cellulose and wood fiber. These materials are non-toxic, biodegradable and carry low embodied energy. These alternatives can cost up to three times more than traditional insulators, but the environmental and human health benefits outweigh the costs.
